Where you place a tattoo affects how much it hurts, how visible it is, and how well it holds up over time. Placement matters just as much as the design itself. Think through the factors below, then drop your design onto a photo of that exact spot with inkPEEK to judge size and position far more accurately.

Pain

Areas close to bone or with thin skin (ribs, ankles, hands) generally hurt more, while fleshier spots like the outer forearm or thigh tend to be easier.

Visibility & setting

Hands, neck, and face are hard to cover day to day. Think about how visible you want it to be for work and everyday life.

How it ages

High-friction areas like hands and feet can fade faster, and frequent sun exposure or major weight changes can affect a tattoo over time.

Size & shape

Depth analysis & blend

AI estimates the contours and depth in your photo, lays the design onto your skin following its curve and angle, and blends it into your skin's natural light and shadow.

Bright, even lighting

Natural light works best. Avoid harsh shadows and strong backlight.

Face the camera straight on

Aim the camera straight at the area rather than from a sharp angle — a head-on shot gives inkPEEK the clearest read of your skin's shape.

Fill the frame

Don't shoot from too far — let the spot where you want the tattoo fill the frame.

Keep it sharp

Hold steady and focus so the shot isn't blurry.

Clean background

A simple background makes background removal and blending look more natural.

Show bare skin

Don't cover the target area with clothing or accessories.

It doesn't have to be perfect — even a few of these will noticeably improve your result.

Who's behind inkPEEK

inkPEEK is built and run by one person. I wanted a tattoo myself — and the idea of committing to something permanent based on pure imagination scared me. When I went looking for a way to see a design on my own body first, everything I found was locked behind a paid subscription. That felt wrong for a decision this personal, so I built my own tool — and made it free.

Getting it to look right took hundreds of test previews: teaching it to read the depth of a photo, and to blend ink into the skin's light instead of pasting it on top like a sticker. The guides on this site come out of that same process — they're written from what I learned building and using the tool, not collected from somewhere else.
